Roughly three in ten shipments inspected in China fail their initial AQL check. That's not a sign the system is broken — it's the system working exactly as intended, catching problems before they cross an ocean instead of after.
What AQL actually measures
Acceptance Quality Limit (AQL) sampling, standardized under ISO 2859-1, is a statistical method for inspecting a randomly selected subset of a production batch rather than every unit. Inspectors check appearance, dimensions, functionality and packaging against agreed tolerances, and the sample size and defect thresholds scale with order size — a small batch and a full container load are held to different, but equally rigorous, sampling math.
Timing is the part buyers get wrong
A pre-shipment inspection (PSI) is only meaningful once at least 80% of the order is manufactured and packed — inspect too early and the sample doesn't represent the finished run. That's why a single PSI, done right before the container is sealed, works as the final checkpoint: it's late enough to reflect the real production run, early enough to stop a bad batch before it ships.
Why a ~30% failure rate is a good sign, not a bad one
A high initial failure rate means the inspection is actually catching things — cosmetic defects, dimensional drift, packaging errors — rather than rubber-stamping whatever the factory presents. The real risk isn't a batch that fails; it's a batch that never gets sampled at all.
For a wholesale buyer, the question isn't whether to use AQL inspection — it's whether it happens on every order, not just the first one, since quality drifts long after a sample shipment impressed everyone.
